Brownsville to recognize Elbert Williams sacrifice this week

Dignitaries from all over the United States will unite in Brownsville, Tennessee, this Saturday to commemorate Elbert Williams.

Williams was a founding member of the first NAACP Chapter in Haywood County. The chapter was organized in 1939. The very next year Williams was murdered as a result of his quest to seek his and others right to vote.

There was never a funeral for Williams who was killed on June 20, 1940. His murder was never solved and remained ignored for decades.

A Memorial Committee, made up mostly of Haywood County citizens, organized this week’s event. “The Memorial Committee is determined to acknowledge Elbert Williams’ ultimate sacrifice to the struggle for civil rights,” the website states.

The keynote speaker for Saturday’s memorial service at Haywood High School is Cornell Brooks, president and CEO of the NAACP.

Three events are planned for June 20, 2015:
* 9:00 to 10:30 am Main Event — Haywood High School, 1175 East College St??
* 11:00 to 11:30 am — Unveiling of State Historic Marker, corner of Jackson St and East Main??
* 1:00 to 1:30 pm — Graveside Memorial Service, Taylor Cemetery off Tabernacle Rd.
