Hammie Nixon gravesite recognized as Tennessee Music Pathway location
The media and public is invited to commemorate Brownsville Bluesman Hammie Nixon Thursday, July 22, 2021, 10 am at Rosenwald Cemetery in Brownsville. Rosenwald Cemetery is an official location on the Tennessee Music Pathways due to the grave site of Nixon. Nixon played the harmonica, kazoo and jug and is considered a pioneer in the early days of the Blues, playing with Sleepy John Estes, Yank Rachell, Son Bonds, Noah Lewis, Hambone Willie Newbern and even hoboed and performed for a while with Jimmie Rodgers, who later became a country recording artist known for his “blue yodels.” Nixon is credited as a major influence in the development of the harmonica as a Blues ensemble instrument.
The event will also kick off Brownsville’s Summer Jamz Music Fest and includes 4 evenings of live music at various locations throughout Brownsville.
